..a teddy's tale...

White fluorescent light overhead illuminated the linoleum floor. The smell of disinfectant is over powering. She can hear beeps and whirrs from unseen machines behind closed doors. Janey walk towards room 216 and hesitated. The corridor is cold and she shivered. She can hear hushed voices inside. She lifted her hand to open the door and stopped. She feels as if she is 6 again..

“Give your brother the toy!” Mary shouted. “You’re too old to be playing with a teddy bear, your brother wants it now, give it to him!”. Janey started crying, she loves her teddy bear. Foofy is her best friend; it was Daddy’s present to her, she and Foofy have been inseparable ever since.

“Janey! Are you listening to me? Give your brother the toy! NOW!” Mary yelled again.

“But, mom, Tommy is sleeping, he won’t want to play with Foofy anymore” Janey plead.

Mary stormed into Janey’s room and snatched the bear off Janey’s bed. Janey ran after Mary, crying and pleading with her mom, begging to have her teddy back. Mary walked back into her own bedroom where a 12-month-old baby lay sleeping and gently tuck the toy next to him. She then switched off the bedroom light and got into bed, leaving Janey sobbing outside the bedroom.

Sniffling, Janey shuffled back to her own bed, she picked up Foofy’s blanket, held it over her face, taking in the teddy bear’s smell and started sobbing anew…Her heart aches and her tears wouldn’t stop.

“Sis, you’re here!” Tommy’s voice startled Janey out of her reverie.

“Mom’s waiting for you, come in”, says Tommy.

Janey hesitated and stepped into the room. Her heart aches….
